It was not copied from the laws of the mother country as such a system was unknown in Eng land, but was originated to meet a new need.On the seventh day of the third month, 1662 O. S., the towns of Springfield, Northampton and Hadley were con stituted a county, called Hampshire. This was not a part set off from any other civil division, but was erected out of territory never before placed under county organization.
