The Jesuit letters and reports cease in the middle of the volume. For this no certain explanation can be given, but the probability is that it is due to the sabse quent suppression of the Order. When this took place in 1773 the archives of the Society passed into the keeping of its unfriends. Though they would not have had any special grudge against the Scottish papers, as such, they were keen on exploiting all the then recent correspondence, which was then taken from its proper depository, and in the disorder, into which everything was thereby thrown, most of the lately received letters, in fact almost everything that was not yet bound up in volumes, was lost, and with the rest the Scotch reports from 1712 onwards.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
