Migrating to a New Life
Angebote / Angebote:
Follow the migrations of the members of two western Wisconsin families as they seek a new and better life for themselves. Each family takes a different route to the west, but they ultimately are united by the marriage of Ben Nelson and Ethel Horton in 1916 while homesteading in central Montana. Although both families dreamed of making Montana their home long into their future, it was not to be. Joined by other homesteading families from the area surrounding La Crosse, Wisconsin, they built their lives around their farms and the small town of Belmont, Montana that provided their social and economic sustenance. They found both great happiness and extreme hardship. Migrating to a New Life: Hardships and Blessings of Two Families traces the joys and sorrows in the lives of these families. Their experiences with political, economic, weather- and illness-related events of the early 1900s help us to understand the legacies left to later generations of Nelsons and Hortons. Linda Nelson Schwandt, EdD, is a retired 2-year college educator who divides her time between Wisconsin and Arizona. She is the granddaughter of hardy Montana homesteaders. Linda is committed to the belief that individuals are an amalgam of their heritage. As a grandmother, she realizes the importance of recording that heritage for younger generations of the family.
