This book is about my many humorous adventures (and some not so humorous) in bars across our great country. Some in the classiest of places and others in inconspicuous dives. Still, a bar is a bar and a drink is a drink no matter where. The classiest include: Sardi's (NYC). Jimmy's Harborside (Boston), The Palmer House (Chicago), Tadich Grill (San Francisco), Ernie's (San Francisco), Bertrand at Mister A's (San Diego) Polo Lounge (Beverly Hills). The dives aren't worth mentioning and I can't remember their names anyway. I've had a fifty-year love affair with the martini and consider myself an expert when it comes to the nuances that make up the perfect martini. Of course, I didn't start out drinking martinis. Like many others, my first experience with alcohol was beer. Next, I cultivated a taste for wine (but definitely not Lafite Rothschild). Then in 1959, a friend introduced me to the gin martini and I was straight away 'hooked' and still am to this day. For me the gin martini is the classic cocktail that has withstood the test of time and many of the events described in this book have taken place over a martini (or two). From my first daring venture into a bar at age seventeen to my escapades from Providence to Los Angeles and many places in between this book is filled with tales of impressive bartenders, daffy cocktail waitresses, haughty waiters, unruly customers and a variety of unique situations to match. Cheers! Davaytee! Salute! Santé! Prost! Skål!
