Shoot: Photography and the Ephemeral Image gathers 15-18 photographers whose work focuses on capturing a moment, with intensity and transcendence. The book includes essays by legendary photographer Stephen Shore and social critic and historian Penny Martin, with a historical overview of the medium and aesthetic by Ken Miller. These essays lead into the first section of photography by the legends who laid the foundation for this type of work, including Juergen Teller, Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Boris Mikhailov to name a few. These works transport the reader into the contemporary works by 15-17 young photographers that are to be the new generation of legends, including Jh Engstrom, Tim Barber, Jason Nocito, Yurie Nagashima, Glynnis McDaris, Linus Bill, Jaimie Warren, Michael Schmelling, and Jason Evans. Employing the most basic photographic tools - a single lens reflex camera and natural light, they must rely on their instincts, their 'eye', and their ability to interact with a situation to create a dynamic image, rather than rely on the comfort of using elaborate lighting set-ups or controlled, manufactured scenarios. Whether working in personal documentary, editorial, fine art, or fashion, these photographers' democratic, free wheeling approach reflects an era in which we are increasingly bombarded by images and in which the emotional resonance of ephemeral images has become an important part of our visual vocabulary. This book is to be the first of it's kind not only to link the generations of younger and older photographers working in this style, but also it is the first book that tackles the topic of this contemporary medium.
