Excerpt from Synthetic Fibers and Paper as Competitors of CottonAnother synthetic fiber, esain fiber, was manufactured in the United States from 1939 until 1948, when the plant was sold to another concern which began commercial production of a vegetable protein fiber, probably made of zein or corn protein, last May. This fiber has softness and resil ience, but its wet strength, important in laundering and for outdoor cloth ing, is quite low.
