Of this volume, which contains a review Of the theories that have been proposed as substitutes for the Catholic doctrine of the Atonement, I have to a considerable extent availed myself of the substance of several lectures which I published some years ago. Should any apology be deemed necessary for so doing, I may state that I have been repeatedly and earnestly urged to republish these lectures in an enlarged and separate form - apart from that controversy respect ing the Fatherhood of God with which they were originally connected.
