The park was established in 189h to preserve the scene of an important Civil War battlefield (battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, Although historic preservation is the park's principal purpose, important natural lands were included within its boundaries. This report is the first of a series reporting the botany and plant ecology of Shiloh (butler and White, in press, White, in preparation).
