This does not constitute part of the design, but was drawn by the engraver to guide him in punching the inscription, it was very shallow, and was presumably removed in most cases when the surface of the die was polished. Similarly, the pellet which is often seen in the centre of this and other reverse types probably marks the hole made in the centre of the die by the foot of the compasses with which these circles were drawn.
