A Commentary

Excerpt from A Commentary: With Introduction and Appendix on the Hellenica of Xenophon The success of his edition of the first and second books of Xenophon's Hellenica, published in 1888, has encouraged the editor to revise and continue his work on the same lines, but on a slightly larger scale, so as to embrace the whole of the seven books. It was his original intention to prepare a revised text, and with that end in view he had already amassed considerable material - drawn more especially from a hitherto uncollated Palatine MS. of the Hellenica which it was his good fortune to discover, along with two others of inferior merit, in the Vatican Library. Finding, however, that the Delegates of the University Press had entrusted the task of revising the text of the whole of Xenophon's writings to Mr. E. C. Marchant, he most willingly abandoned this portion of the work, and has contented himself with collecting together in a short appendix such readings and conjectures - very few in number - as for some reason or other he has preferred to those admitted by Mr. Marchant into his own text.
