Excerpt from A Compilation of Registers of the Army of the United States, From 1815 to 1837, Inclusive: To Which Is Appended a List of Officers on Whom Brevets Were Conferred by the President of the United States, for Gallant Conduct or Meritorious Services During the War With Great Britain
The work now offered to the Army, originally contemplated nothing beyond a bare compilation of Official Army Registers. It soon, however, became apparent to the Compiler, as he proceeded with the collection of his materials, that its value, as a book of refer ence, would be enhanced by a slight extension of the original plan. The various orders issued from time to time, having reference to organization, seemed to him to belong properly, to a work of the character of the one he was compiling, and they have accordingly been introduced. He has also annexed an appendix, which will be found to contain matter of an interesting character, and which has been, heretofore, accessible to but few. This, he hopes, will render the work additionally. Acceptable to the subscribers and the My generally.
