Excerpt from A Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary: For the Use of StudentsThe above rule is, however, subject to one condition, namely, that the spelling given should actually occur, and should not be merely an assumed form. Hence if a word does not occur in the characteristic Early West Saxon form, I have taken the Late W'est Saxon, and if this again is not found, I have fallen back on a dialectic form.It will no doubt be observed that this plan has not always been adhered to, but the exceptions have usually been made on some ground of expediency, such as the preponderating frequency of occurrence of a certain form, or the desire to bring all the compounds of a word to the same place.Normalisations have, as will be inferred from what has gone before, been generally avoided. I cannot hope to have excluded them altogether, as they swarm in some of the glossaries on which the Dictionary is founded. A few, which I have noticed at a late stage, have been ear-marked with an asterisk.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
