This edited volume provides an overview and critical analyses of issues arising from a decade of waves of disasters in Otautahi Christchurch. Despite the diverse topics and contributors from different disciplines in social sciences, social scientists in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond employ the Critical Disaster Studies (CDS) perspectives and critically reflect on the experiences, responses and long-term impacts of the wave of disasters that followed the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence. Otautahi's recovery provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from a decade of urban disasters in order to prepare for the future. The chapter contributors focus on the production of vulnerability, the human dimensions of disaster, the practical lessons that can be drawn from it and the ways in which Otautahi serves as a living laboratory for the future.
