The author was an 18th-century Scottish physician, medical writer and moralist. This work, written following his wife's death in 1761, honoured her memory by recording her thoughts on female education and was intended only for his own daughters. However, when Gregory's son published the book in 1774 after his father's death it became a bestseller, going through many editions and translations.
