Its extreme length, east and west, including Long Island, is 408 miles. Leaving Long Island out of View, it is only 340 miles. Its greatest breadth north and south, is 310 miles. The area of the whole surface, excepting the waters of the great lakes, is estimated at acres, or square miles the entire area being square miles.
