A History of Ablaut in the Strong Verbs

Excerpt from A History of Ablaut in the Strong Verbs: From Caxton to the End of the Elizabethan PeriodThis dissertation is an attempt at a history of. Ablaut in the strong verbs from Caxton to the Elizabethan Age inclusive. By the Elizabethan Age I mean that epoch in English liter ature which may be said to have closed with the death of Ben Jonson in 1637. My method has been to examine the works of the great writers of prose and verse, and then, in order to see how far the usages of these men were peculiar to themselves and how far they were advanced or conservative, I have examined a large number of works of every variety and standing in prose, verse and the drama. Next, in order to see what difference print made, to determine how wide the gulf may have been between literary and colloquial use and to find out, if possible, what people really said in every day life, I have examined letters, diaries and other mss. Which have not been printed till our own day. Unless I have stated the contrary in my List of Books Used, I have taken out every form from the works in question and estimated the frequency of its use. The material thus brought together was found to be much too large for the limits of a dissertation for the doctorate, so I have merely given a summary of results, and partly complete lists of certain forms. The whole of the material has been deposited in the Library of the English Seminar at Bonn, and it will be easily accessible to any scholar who wishes to make further researches on this subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
