Excerpt from A History of Scotland, Chiefly in Its Ecclesiastical Aspect, Vol. 2
Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised Th'ee, is burnt up with fire and all our pleasant things are laid waste. - Isaiah lxiv. 10, 11.
The Convention of the Estates of Scotland which met in Edinburgh in August 1560, marks a critical era in the national history. When the Three Estates met on the lst of August, Catholicism was the religion of the country when the Three Estates rose on the 24th of the same month, the Catholic hierarchy was abolished by law, and the Confession of Faith, drawn up by the leaders of the new opinions as a summary of their doctrines, was for mally ratified, and was received as the established creed.
