Excerpt from A History of the First Presbyterian Church of Carlisle, PaThe First Presbyterian Church of Carlisle had its first place of meeting on the bank of the Conodoguinet about two miles west of the present town. It was then the centre of a large district of country, bounded on the North and South by the ranges of mountains which form the Valley, and on the East and West by the ex tent of the settlements. The most eastern portion Of the Valley does not appear to have been the first settled. About the time the white people began to cross the Susquehanna, the Proprietaries laid off between seven and eight thousand acres of land extending eleven miles from the river, and between the Conodoguinet and the Yellow Breeches Creeks, for a manor on which settlements were Accordingly when this region first became known to the whites, the Indians who occupied it appear to have been principally remnants of several tribes.
