Excerpt from A History of the Origin of the Mysteries and Doctrines of Baptism and the Eucharist: As Introduced Into the Church of Rome and the Church of England, And Their Jewish and Heathen OriginThe accompanying work has been the labour of a life, the product of much thought and of forty years' patient and un wearying research. It has been also a labour of love, inasmuch as it is the object of the writer, at the close of a long and useful life, to present to others the arguments, unanswerable to his own mind, which have led him to see the unsoundness of a belief in the sacramental efficacy of Water Baptism and the Eucharist. In this belief he was himself brought up, and it is a portion of the creed of the Roman and Anglican Churches, and to a greater or smaller extent, of most forms of Protestant Dissent. He was thus led to the conviction of the scriptural soundness of the entire disuse of these ceremonies as taught by the Society of Friends, and by some obscure and so-called heretical sects of Early Christendom.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
