Soon after the appointment of Cardinal Beaton to the archbishopric of St. Andrews he resolved not only to gratify his vanity but to signalize his zeal for the church, and this he did in the style of a sovereign pontiff. He summoned a great assembly to meet at St. Andrews in May.
