A Life on the Fringe is a personal story of a journey that begins aup a hollera in the heart of Appalachia during the Great Depression. Beginning with World War Two, I ride the crest of world events of the twentieth century as assignments take me from continent to continent, war to war, cold and hot. The British Empire succumbs as the Marshall Plan restores Europe, and General MacArthur directs the democratization of an ancient culture in Japan. The Soviet Union and America vie for world hegemony as Asia struggles to establish a new identity. These events whirl about me like an indistinct kaleidoscope as I find romance on the Rhine, and honeymoon in Paris and Rome. I conclude with an offering of advice to my posterity that hopefully prescribes a remedy to the fissures that threaten the cohesion our culture if not the whole of Western civilization.
