Excerpt from A Manual of the Practice of Medicine A third edition of this Manual having been demanded, I have endeavored to render it more worthy of the great encouragement hitherto bestowed upon it. In doing this, the original plan has been adhered to, of making its pages the medium of as much practical information as the limited space at ray disposal would allow: my aim having been to obtain brevity, not so much by omission as by a strict avoidance of all reiteration, by on all occasions saying what I mean in the fewest number of words possible, as well as by a careful selection of those points, only, which can aid the practitioner in the discharge of his responsible duties at the bedside. In short, I have endeavored to paint the features of disease not imperfectly, but - as it were - in miniature. Without attempting in any degree to deprecate criticism, it is still due to my readers to say - how sincerely I trust it may not be thought that too dogmatic a tone has been adopted in the remarks upon the treatment of disease.
