Excerpt from A New Treatise on the Use of the Globes, and Practical Astronomy, Or a Comprehensive View of the System of the World, Vol. 1 of 4: In Four Parts, Designed for the Instruction of Youth, and Particularly Adapted to the United States Be it remembered, That on the sixth day of January, in the thirty-sixth year of the Independence of the United Slates of America, James Wallace, of the said district, hath deposited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof he claims as Author, in the words and figures following, to wit: - 'A new Treatise on the Use of the Globes, and Practical Astronomy, or a comprehensive view of the System of the World. In four parts. I. An extensive collection of astronomical and other definitions. II. Problems performed by the Terrestrial Globe, including those relative to geography, navigation, dialling, &c., with many new and important problems and investigations, particularly useful to the navigator and practical astronomer. III. Problems performed by the Celestial Globe, including those of finding the longitude at sea, new methods of finding the latitude, with only one altitude of the sun, or a star, at any given time, with the method of representing the spherical triangles on the globe, &c., IV. A comprehensive account of the Solar System, with the elementary principles, and most valuable modern discoveries in Astronomy to the present time. The nature and motion of Comets, of the Fixed Stars, Eclipses, the theory of the Tides, Laws of Motion, Gravity, &c., with Diagrams elucidating the demonstrations. The whole serving as an introduction to the higher Astronomy and Natural Philosophy, is illustrated with a variety of important notes, useful remarks, &c., and each problem with several examples. The necessary astronomical instruments are pointed out, and the most useful tables are inserted in the work. Designed for the instruction of youth, and particularly adapted to the United States.'
