Can a painting that supposedly does not exist be worth a murder? A woman hairdresser shows a friend her riot of stunning tattoos, and Fred Taylor, from his accidental vantage point in the barber's chair, knows that those images--weird insects, beasts, and naked human figures--could only have come from a painting of significant value. Determined to find the original, Fred starts on a trail of inquiries that lead from the hairdresser to the illegal tattoo parlor of an unlicensed genius, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, into an urban wilderness in New Hampshire. But anyone who must have seen the painting denies that it exists, despite the proof laid bare on the hairdresser's skin. Proceeding cautiously with his unwilling witnesses, Fred encounters a suspiciously convenient hit-and-run accident that turns one potential informant into an abrupt dead end.
