Excerpt from A Plea for Retaining the Gregorian Chant in the Recitation of the Psalter and Canticles of the ChurchHe purpose of this little book is to endeavour to give some reasons for preferring the ancient music of the Church, in chanting the Psalms and Canticles at Divine Service, to the later music which may be said to date from the 18th century, and is known as the Anglican Chant. The writers of this paper will have attained their end if one or more of its more thoughtful and unprejudiced readers is led to conclude that, after all in this as well as in other instances, 'the old is better.First it may be well brie¿y to introduce that species of vocal music which is known as Plainsong, or the Gregorian Chant, from the name of the great Bishop of Rome, S. Gregory, who set it in order and enriched it at about the beginning of the 7th century. It is the Church's own song come down to us through the ages, often now depreciated and disliked by reason of its old-world ¿avour, which fails to charm the ear when the mind has given no thought to the meaning of its weird beauty, nor cared to penetrate its hidden depths. For depths there are to sound beyond what catches or is appreciated by the ear. This is true of all music. 'all emotions which depend upon the senses alone are necessarily short lived. A tune, if it be a tune, and nothing more, quickly becomes common and stale.' Although the scope of our present subject is limited, to an appeal for the retention of the old music in its simplest form, viz. For Psalms and Canticles, the words of a living writer on Gregorian Music are well worth quoting here.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
