Excerpt from A Princess of Java: A Tale of the Far East
The palace of the Bopati, who was a Javanese prince and Mattah - Djarri's father, was a striking feature in the suburbs of Kali Chandi. The title of Bopati, equivalent to that of regent or governor of a province, at once pro claimed his high rank and authoritative position, and, although the exact letter of J avan law does not declare a Bopati must be a prince by blood, yet it would be difficult to find one unable to boast of this dignity.
