Jean Louise Finch, better known as Scout from Harper Lee's classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is now a middle school history teacher in Savannah, Georgia.
In the relevant and insightful new novel A Row to Hoe, Jean decides to teach her students about slavery in pre-Civil War America, believing that such disturbing subjects are easier to learn about when thought of in light of potential positive outcomes. Jean reviews the institution of slavery, several slave narratives, and discusses the Underground Railroad as well as the Abolitionist movement and racism.
After teaching her class about slavery, one of her students, 12-year-old Lisa, loses one leg below the knee, only to find that her remaining ankle becomes very strong, because it has to compensate for the inadequacies of her prosthesis. Lisa eventually finds that her new challenges can be a positive force in her life.
