Smart's Song to David was originally published in a separate form in 1763, and in a somewhat limited issue, if we may judge by the extreme rarity of that edition from 1790 down to the present time. Although a collection of our Poet's works was issued in 1791, its editor did not include this masterpiece for the reason that it bore too many melancholy proofs of the estrange ment of Smart's mind. B'oth Anderson and Chalmers, in their huge collections of the works of the British Poets, were compelled to omit it owing to there being no copy of the work forthcoming.
