My aim will be to trace the Thais legend from its Obscure beginnings to Hrotsvitha, through the Middle Ages, to its resuscitation by Anatole France and his imitators. Hrots vitha's version will be especially stressed and made more promi nent by attempting an English translation Of her play, not only because this was the first purely literary use made of the Thais legend but because it was Of great in¿uence on Anatole France 's novel.
