Excerpt from A Text-Book of Pathology, Vol. 2: Systematic Practical I Feel that an apology is necessary for the long interval which has elapsed between the issue of the first and of the second volume of this work The labour, however, has proved much greater than I anticipated on commencing the work, and that involved in the production of the present volume has been particularly arduous. This volume completes the consideration of Part III. on the Diseases of Special Tissues and Organs, and also contains Parts IV. and V. on Diseases caused ly Vegetable and Animal Parasites, and on Animal Heat and Fever respectively. Under the Diseases of Special Tissues and Organs a chapter is devoted to Malformations, and another to Diseases of the Foetal Membranes and Placenta. The subject of Practical Bacteriology was disposed of in the first volume, that of Systematic Bacteriology is contained in this. The bacteriology of some diseases, such as diphtheria, typhoid, and cholera, is described in the section devoted to the Pathology of Special Organs, and such germ-diseases as are not included in this section are described under Systematic Bacteriology. The department of Systematic Bacteriology comprises also such subjects as Fermentation, Putrefaction, and Immunity. It has been my endeavour in this, as in the first volume, to append a reference to the source from which each statement of importance has been derived. The name of the publication, as before, is indicated by a number, and the key to these numbers is inserted at the end of the book.
