In conformity with these ideas, I have under taken a'task, attended, I am aware, with so many difficulties, that even failure will not be disgraceful, while, on the other hand, success, if my labours should fortunately be crowned with it, will be doubly gratifying, as I shall then ¿atter myself with having con tributed in some measure to the union of accurate theory and judi cions practice, and thus, ultimately, to the promotion of arts and manufactures.The Treatise of meichanms I now presume to lay before the public is comprised in two volumes, besides a volume of plates, Of these, the first volume is devoted chie¿y to the theory: the second is practical and descriptive.
