When the second volume of that work appeared I was urged to prepare such a text-book by some whose judgment appeared worthy of great confidence, and earliest among these was my honored friend, john william wallace, Esq., of Philadelphia, who inherits, with scholarly tastes Of a high order, a peculiar aptitude for studies in this department of jurisprudence, and from whose critical suggestions I have especially profited. But, thinking the profession well enough satisfied with the earlier works Of Angell and Mr. Justice Story, I passed the subject from my thoughts, and this volume would not have been written had not the publishers of those works and my own informed me, many months later, that they intended issuing a new text-book on Bailments which should give par ticular prominence to the modern law of Carriers, and that I had the first Opportunity of becoming its author.
