We may assume that the air damping of the vane is proportional to the air pressure.5 Then when the damping due to the friction of the suspension is comparable to that due to the air, the curve will bend toward the horizontal. As there is no such tendency at a pressure of mm of mercury, it is apparent that the damping due to the suspension is exceedingly small. In some preliminary experiments when the friction of the suspension over the bridge was rather large the damping due to the suspension was not negligible. This curve shows experimentally that which is derived theoretically in equation (15) viz, that the maximum amplitude is inversely proportional to the damping.
