These facts, however, cannot prevent me from appreciating honesty of motive, sincerity of purpose, political talent and sagacity, military valor, and patience under great suffering after the war, on the part of the Southern people. Much of what they did, when the final estimate is given, must make us feel very proud that we are Sprung from a common stock, that our destiny was the same before the great difference arose, and that it is to be one henceforward. They are a part of us, and we are a part of them, together ennobled, very likely, by the trial, as Lincoln was by sore distress, for the tasks to be performed side by side in this century.
