Excerpt from Abstract of Fur Laws, 1948-49There are some bad practices in the United States which have reduced the number and quality of fur pelts harvested. The use of poison, which kills many animals that are not found before the fur is Spoiled, smoking animals out of their dens, which too often suffocates them instead of forcing them out, destroying dens, which either leaves the animals with out suitable places in which to rear their young or drives them out of the locality altogether, trapping too early in the fall, which Catches many animals having small, unprime pelts, trapping too late in spring, which destroys pregnant females and young as well as taking pelts which have become unprime or scarred.
