In this book, author Peter Plowman describes the Australian and New Zealand ocean liners/companies that traversed the Pacific. The main North American ports were San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company was the first to instigate regular operations, with the route later taken over by the Oceanic Steamship Company. This in turn became the Matson Line with its famous liners the Mariposa and the Monteray. With its meticulous research and photographs, the book details the liners, changes of names, changes of ownership, voyages, and the liners' eventual fates. It also documents the history of liners that were requisitioned in both World War I and World War II. The book's front cover shows the Tahiti, which travelled the San Francisco to Sydney route, and the Aorangi, which travelled the Vancouver route.
