Excerpt from Agricultural Address, Delivered Before the Camden Industrial Association, September 30, 1868
In the beginning when God created the heaven and the earth, He thought it not unworthy of Him to plant a garden to the eastward in Eden, and out of the ground He made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, and he took Man and put him into the garden to dress it and keep it.
From that time to this, poets have sung, and philosophers and statesmen have sought the pleasures of a rural life, as if they turned, by a divine instinct, to the first employment which the Supreme Being assigned to man.
