Our visit to this beautiful lagoon island is generally made during the months of May and June, which in these southern tropics are regarded as winter months. Our thatched bungalow, of lath and plaster, at Uvea does not boast a fireplace of any kind, and often when I have been left alone in the evenings and have felt the chilliness of night creeping on, my thoughts have turned to the warm grass hut of our native caretaker, which stood in the compound, some two hundred yards away. The middle-aged couple, who had charge of the place during our absence, were clean, intelligent people, and I knew well that, if I went to them, I should receive a warm welcome, and an invitation to a seat on their mat by the fireside.
