An Astronomer's Wife (Illustrated Edition)

Angebote / Angebote:

Professor Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall (1830-92) was an American academic, suffragist, abolitionist, and mathematician. She was the teacher and later wife of astronomer Asaph Hall whom she married in 1856. The Halls had four sons, Asaph Jr., who also became an astronomer, Samuel, Angelo, the author of this memoir published in 1908, and Percival, all of whom were home-schooled by their mother before attending Harvard. Angeline had to give up her own academic career after her marriage but she assisted and encouraged her husband in his search for satellites of Mars which he successfully discovered with the aid of her calculations. The largest crater on Phobos is named after her in recognition of her support for the satellite's discovery. This work is dedicated to Angelo's daughter, Peggy, who never knew her grandmother as she had died before Peggy was born.
