Excerpt from An Autobiography It would not, I think, have occurred to me to write an account of my life if a publisher had not asked me to do so, for, except that the life of any one written with sincerity would have a certain value, I did not think that mine was worth recording. But, after revolving the proposal for a year, I saw it in a different light. My life, I reflected, belongs not to me alone, but to God, and to my fellow-men, if God commanded, or if my fellow-men demanded, I had no right to hold it back. The demand of the public was made clear, in so far as a publisher does not propose to publish what the public does not want. And as I waited and pondered, it seemed to me more and more that the command of God was not wanting. I was thankful to have an opportunity of recording, however slightly, my tribute to the most loyal and inspiring friend, that, I should imagine, any man ever had, the friend to whom, for nearly forty years, I owed all my best and most effective impulses, the friend who even now from behind the veil continues to rally and urge me on to the goal. And as I began to review my life I became almost startlingly aware that it had been under the control and direction of a higher and wiser will than mine, and if readers should perceive what to me is clear, this record might have the effect of helping them to recognize, and to submit to, the guiding hand.
