Idioms and constructions that are more profitably taken up later have been eliminated. The editor offers his humble apologies to the authors, the integrity of whose work has been sacrificed to the needs of the class-room.The editor believes that from the very start reading at sight should be systematically pursued. His own practice is to read the next day's lesson with the class at sight, in the hope of thus forming a sound linguistic habit. For this purpose he prefers extracts of some length as pre senting greater sequence of thought and consistency of vocabulary. Pains have been taken to indicate cognates in the Vocabulary and to point out composition or deri vation where this can be done concisely.
