Even a summary of the causes which lead to the French revolution cannot now be given. Did even time permit, the speaker would hardly presume to undertake such a task. In order to gain such a view of the person and position of Lafay ette as mav answer our purpose at present, it will be only necessary to glance at the state of things in France at the time when Lafayette was placed at the head of the militia, or as they were called, the national guards of that kingdom.
