Excerpt from An Experiment in Approval VotingA major experiment to compare approval voting with regular plurality voting took place during the annual election of The Institute of Management Sciences (tims) in 1985. Most of the voters filled out an experimental approval ballot along with an official plurality ballot, thereby permitting a detailed, side-by-side examination of the two methods. The election involved 1800 voters in three multicandidate elections, which makes it by far the largest field test of approval voting to date.
