The exclamation Of a friend when introduced to the Moor from the grassy steppe above Okehampton, Why, I expected a great plain, and these are mountains will long live in my memory as an expression Of the popular conception Of Dartmoor. That the waste is a plain is an idea very general with those who do not know the country between Exe and Tamar, and this in spite of guide-books, newspaper articles, and the contri butions which have from time to time appeared in certain magazines.
