Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Worshipful Company of Girdlers, London
After two and a half years of work, done in spare hours, and at times, it must be confessed, a little wearisome, especially when so many old documents and manuscripts had to be consulted, I have at length put together this little History of the Girdlers' Company, and now that it is finished I must confess to being struck with somewhat the same feelings of dismay as occurred to the small boy in "Pickwick, " who learnt his alphabet and wondered whether it was worth while going through so much to accomplish so little, but however far this little book falls short of what I wished and intended it to be, if the result of it is, as I hope it will be, to draw still closer together that bond of brotherhood which unites all true Girdlers, I shall have the satisfaction of knowing that my labours have not been in vain. In conclusion I wish to acknowledge, as freely and as publicly as I can, the great assistance I derived from the late father of the Company, Mr. George William Rich, of Hounslow.
