Excerpt from Analysis of Program Activities, National Institutes of Health, 1956, Vol. 1Ability to study cancers growing in tissue culture and to observe the transition from normal to cancerous in such systems is an enormously powerful tool which Dr. Earle and his associates have developed extremely well. Not all normal cells, nor even all cancers, can be grown in this way: Br. V. G. Mahler has successfully grown SA to 60 specimens of carcinoma obtained from patients hospitalized at the Clinical Center. My 37 of the cultures have grown when transferred to fresh media, and jusfi'n of these have been carried for as many as 5 generations in sub culture. Obviously, further advance in technology is required if tissue culture is to realize its potential as a research tool for the study of cancer.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
