Excerpt from Ancient Classics: For English ReadersThere is, however, a far more interesting question, to which we may yet be enabled to give an answer by a careful study of the Satires of J livenal, and that con sists in the consideration Of the gradual development of the high moral qualities with which our poet was endowed. We have elsewhere endeavoured to point out how we may trace the fierce and almost truculent satire of his youth gradually softening down to the gentler temper Of his mature years.
