Excerpt from Annual Report of the Railroads Commissioner, for the Year Ending December 31, 1900: Made to the General Assembly at the January Session, 1901 To the Honorable the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island: Gentlemen: - Section six of chapter one hundred eighty-seven provides that the Railroad Commissioner shall make an annual report to the General Assembly, at the January session, of the "condition and proceedings of the several railroad corporations, so far as the public interest may require, with such suggestions and recommendations as he may deem necessary or expedient." In compliance with that portion of my duty I present the following report: The annual returns of all railroad corporations, both steam and street, are to be made to the Railroad Commissioner for the year ending the last day of June, said returns to be sent to him on or before the first day of the following September, but, though there is a penalty fixed by law upon these corporations for neglect or failure to make the returns at the time prescribed, yet few of them comply with the law, and the last returns this year were not received until about the first of November. These returns will be found in full in the appendix to this report, together with tables, compiled from them, giving the more important statistics up to that date. As the annual session of the General Assembly does not commence till January, I have, as usual, made my general report upon the conditions of the railroad corporations for the calendar year.
