In 1966, at just 22, Richard Goldstein became the first person to write about rock music in a major publication. From his unique position he saw the arc of events that shaped the 1960s. He got stoned with Brian Wilson, was present for Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech and took Susan Sontag to her first disco. Goldstein developed close relationships with Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, whose early deaths fueled his disillusionment as the music he loved evolved from a communal rite into a vast industry - and the sense of hope for radical social upheaval faded away.
