How 1003 before this period a regal mansion existed on the present site is uncertain though if such did exist, which is highly probable, we may suppose it to have been but an inconsidershle place. Established it as the regular residence of the sove reign, and either totally rebuilt it, or added to it so very land, as generally to claim with posterity the honour of being the original founder.
